Book Review: 360 Degrees Longitude

Last week, I attended my first book club discussion about the selected book for March, 360 Degrees Longitude by John Higham. The host of the book club selected it because she knows the family (they are from Logan, Utah originally) and also seems to be a world traveler herself. The premise of the book is that a family of 4 embarks on a year long trip around the world. It seemed interesting and it was almost unbelievable as I began reading it. They started in Europe bicycling on two tandems! Their kids were 11 and 8 at the time of the trip and being a mom of two kids almost that age, I was intrigued that they had the energy to plan the trip and actually execute it. Most people would just talk about it but never do it. The first half of the book was really interesting but then it dragged. I struggled at times to continue on, skimming instead of reading even. That was the general feeling from the ladies at Book Club too, everyone had trouble finishing (some didn't even get to the end). All in all though it was an interesting book and I recommend reading it. It was fun to discuss where they went and think about what places I would choose if doing a trip of this sort. I think the reason it dragged on was because it was almost overwhelming to complete such a journey, I couldn't absorb all that they did in the year and I'm sure their own kids felt overwhelmed too. The experiences were unforgettable though. I think if I did a trip like this, I would do it in shorter trips instead of one long trip.

I have the pleasure of hosting Book Club in April and I have selected A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick. I hope it's a good choice, because the reviews I have read are mixed. I'll give an update after the next book club discussion!
